Quiet Garage Door

Inexpensive Upgrades to Quiet Garage Door

  • Garage Door Rollers Replacement: Rollers are like the tires on a car. They take a lot of wear and tear, and as a result wear out in 3-10 years depending on usage, material quality and maintenance. We only install nylon rollers with ball bearings, which allow the rollers to operate more smoothly and quietly, and they last much longer than plastic or steel rollers that most new construction comes with.
  • Hinge Replacement: Hinges take a lot of abuse, especially if the door is out of alignment. Door hinges vary as they go from top to bottom. Hinges between the 3rd and top panel experience the most fatigue and wear out faster. We use thicker 14-gauge hinges because they last longer and are quieter.
  • Realignment / Tuneup: Foundations and framing shift every couple years and this significantly impacts the operation of your door. Every 3-5 years (and more frequently for detached structures) it's best to reset the cables and spring tension and adjust tracks.
  • Regular Lubrication: It is best to lubricate your garage door every 6 months. Any metal-to-metal contact is worth addressing. Key areas are the hinges, springs, rollers, and bearing plates.

Moderately Priced Upgrades to Quiet Garage Door

  • Garage Door Opener Replacement: This is probably the second best thing, after rollers, to quiet down your door. Belt drives are so much smoother and quieter than chain drives or screw drives. Belts are also more durable than chain drives and require less maintenance.
  • Spring Replacement: Springs can be replaced prior to failure. In their final years, they do not perform as well having lost a lot of their strength. The benefit of proactively changing springs is avoiding the inconvenience of being trapped inside a garage, and the damage a garage door and garage door opener can incur when trying to open the door.

Value-Add Upgrades

  • Weather Sealing: You'll always have gaps between the garage door and the frame. A simple solution is replacing the bottom seal and putting vinyl weatherseal along the top and sides of the door. This seals gaps that allow lots of leaves and debris to accumulate in the garage.
  • Insulation: Insulation can be added to a non-insulated door. This can help with energy costs, is good for the environment, and can dampen the sound of the garage door as it opens and closes.
  • Operator Reinforcement Brackets: These brackets connect to the center style of the door. This provides a sturdier brace to which the garage door opener attaches. Prevent more expensive repairs down the road by preserving the integrity of the door panel.
